Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Reopens it’s Doors After Devastation Caused by Hurricane Maria.

The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf and Beach Resort officially reopens, following it’s closure after Hurricane Maria. The oceanfront resort reopened with a multi-million dollar renovation. This is another strong sign for Puerto Rico’s quickly rebounding tourism sector, which is a vital part of the island’s economy.

Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20th 2017, devestating the island and plunging all of it’s 3.4 million resident’s into desperate humanitarian crisis. The category 4 storm ploughed across the island, with winds of 155mph, uprooting trees, downing weather stations and mobile-phone towers, ripping roofs off homes and flooding them. Electricity was cut off to 100% of the island and access to clean water and food became limited for most. Hurricane Maria is the worst storm to hit Puerto Rico in over 80 years and the scale of the destruction has been devastating. It is estimated to have caused as much as $94 billion in damage, a crippling toll for an island that was already billions of dollars in debt.

Puerto Rico officials are urging the public to continue to visit the island, which will help contribute to the island’s recovery. To help in the recovery process, Wyndham has pledged to make a donation of one dollar, for every room night booked within the first two months of reopening, to the EL Yunque Rainforest Restoration Fund.

The hotel, which sits on a beachfront just outside of Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan, is one of the island’s most popular resorts. The lobby has been refreshed and the Tiki Hut and Barista Cafe have been renovated. A brand new Rum Bar has also been added and focuses on special rum cocktails, with a selection of rare private reserve rums. The Hotel’s gourmet Marbella restaurant also underwent a $1.2 million makeover.

Puerto Rico boasts beautiful beaches, warm waters and a vibrant cultural experience. However a word of warning: if you are thinking of purchasing a timeshare there, don’t let the dream turn into a nightmare and find yourself falling victim to the hard-sell ! What often starts out as a relaxing getaway, can quickly turn into tales of mis-selling and yearly maintenance fees, which you cannot “getaway” from !
